Codes and Conventions

All magazines tend to follow basic codes and conventions for example they all have a masthead usually at the top of the page it will usually be quite large so that people notice it. Also there would usually be a large main image that takes up most of the page and often some smaller images around it. another factor they all share is that they will have the date and issue number somewhere on the cover of the magazine.

The codes and conventions will differ as to what genre the magazine is. Different genres have different colour schemes for example NME magazine uses a colour scheme of dull colours such as black, white, grey and red. on the other hand magazines like top of the pops use bright colours like pink and purple that will catch the attention of a younger audience.

Also I noticed that the different genre of magazine use different types of font. The punk rock genre of magazine will often use bold block writing that stands out and pop magazines tend to use more bubbly writing to match the light hearted tone of the magazine.

They also try and make their magazine popular by giving away free gifts like a poster or a special offer. this tends to make some people more interested in buying the magazine. There will usually be a little teaser of what is going to be included in the magazine to make you want to buy it and read more. this will often be a quote from a popular artist that they have interviewed.

My magazine

This is my final music magazine design. The front cover, contents page and double page spread.

Audience Research

I chose three different genre of magazine to base my audience research on. The first one is a typical girly magazine called top of the pops, and you can tell this just by looking at the cover. The main colours that are used are pink and purple, this will attract the attention of young girls as they tend to be quite popular colours. Also it says 7 sizzling posters all of boys who are adored by a lot of girls so they may want to buy the magazine because of the free posters. As well as that it says that inside there are fashion tips, this would interest girls as they often want to keep up with the latest trends. The stories inside will tend to be light hearted and sweet.

The next magazine I looked as was for an older generation. As it has a popular rap artist on the front I would say its aimed mainly at teenage boys who tend to listen to rap music. The covers quite simple with a large intimidating picture of a popular rap artist 50 cent. This would appeal more to boys than girls as its the genre of music that boys tend to listen to more. the colours are quite dull compared to other magazines, using colours like grey, black white and red. Keeping the cover simple but still eye catching.
The last magazine I looked at for my research was off a rock genre. It uses a mixture of dull and lighter colours. The stories included inside will tend to be quite hard hitting unlike other magazines. So I think that the target audience for this magazine would be teenagers to young adults. there are bold words like CLASH that will stand out to the audience as it is quite a powerful word. The main image is of a singer from the band guns and roses, he looks quite serious and bold. This magazine may scare the younger generation as it has quite a serious tone. Also not a lot of children tend to listen to rock music so they may not no any of the artists that feature in the magazine therefor it wont interest them as much as other magazines with artists that they no and love.

Mood board

I have chosen to base my mood board on current rock/pop artists that often perform at concerts and festivals. I have chosen rock as the genre as it is what I like to listen to, also it is what alot of people my age like to listen to so therefore I no its popular. The artist i have included on my mood board are quite old so therefore alot of the older generation would of also heard their music and enjoyed it.

In order to find these images i had to research lots of different punk rock artists. I decided to go with popular well known artists. Not all of my pictures are of people i included some of the bands logos and some cartoon pictures to keep it interesting.

I also included a concert which is purely for rock artists this will help when making my magazine as i can add in the chance to win tickets to that well known concert. This will help my magazine appeal to the audience as people will see the logo for the Sweden rock festival and will want to read on and find out more about it.

My photo shoot plan

This is my photshoot plan when taking my pictures i will follow this carefully to ensure my pictures for the genre of music that i am focusing on. By creating a photo shoot plan i will be able to save time as i have already planned out when, where and what time the pictures will be taking. i have also writen down who the model is (ryan marchant) and what he will be wearing. so therefore my photoshoot will be a quick and easy progress to get through and i can then concentrate on what i am going to do with my images.

Templates for my magazine

These are the templates for my music magazine contents page, double page spread and front cover. I looked at contents pages, articles and front covers in other magazines of the same genre as mine to help me with some layout ideas. I chose quite a simple organised layout so that it was easy for the audience to read and not to over crowded so that it looks cheap and not professional. These will really help when it comes to actually making my magazine as i will just have to follow what i have planned out. i wont need to worry about the layout i will just follow my flat plan and concentrate on the fonts, colour scheme and pictures that i am going to use.

Original and edited images

These are my four images that I am going to use in my magazine. i took the photos and then edited them on  my computer so that they were more interesting and not so plain and simple. One of my pictures I changed into black and white so that it would stand out from the rest, and for the others I changed the contrast of colours and slightly alterred them. By editing them i feel that they look more professional and will fit in well with my magazine. There were no major changes to the images but by altering them just slightly it made a big difference.

Different institutions

MTV, which stands for music Television, is an American cable television channel based in New York City, that launched on Saturday, August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was   to play music videos. In its early years MTV's main target audience was young adults buttoday, MTV primarily broadcasts are targeted at adolescents and teenagers.

IPC which stands for Media International Publishing Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc. and is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year.

They are both big institutions within the music industry and are responsible for a number of magazines and music channels.

Flatplan of NME magazine

This is a flat plan that I found of NME magazine. It shows everything that is included in the magazine and shows how it is laid out on each page. This helped me decide on the layout of my own magazine as     it is simple and easy to understand what is included on each page. It also shows different ways that I could lay out my double page spread article as there is more than one included in the flat plan. I then went on to create my own flat plan in order to help me when creating my final piece.

Representation of men and women

Men and women are represented differently in magazines. Some people want to look up to them and be more like them for example girls often want to look like the famous women that they see on the front conver of music magazines as they have the perfect figure, skin and hair. However others see them pureley as sex icons represented to entertain the male audience as they are made to look alluring and appealing.

Men on the other hand are made to look powerful and strong. Boys will often look up to them as they are respected. They are also seen as sex icons but no so often as women are as they normaly have their bodies covered up. Their facial expressions show power as the reader will feel lke they are staring them straight in the eye. Whereas women would be doing a seductive stare to get the interest of the male audience.

Typography

Here are some fonts that I experimented with in order to decide which one I would like to use on my front cover. The one I have decided to use is the one below as I feel it would match the genre of music that I am focusing on.

in-depth analysis

What institution owns your magazine?
NME magazine is currently published by IPC Media, the UK’s leading publisher of consumer magazines and websites. Over 26 million people read an IPC magazine, and over 350 million copies are sold each year.

What effect does this have on the content?
The magazine is a certain genre which makes it successful as people know and like the genre. It also makes the magazine well known as people will associate that certain genre of music to the magazine.

Let’s discuss the flat plan – what have you learnt about the magazine?
The main layout NME is that it is similar to a newspaper throughout most of the magazine. There is a lot of use of the colours black, white and red, along with bold headlines and articles that have been written in columns. As well as this the inside pages of NME have a newspaper feel in comparison to the normal glossy magazine pages used in most other magazines.
It also often uses a full page photo for some articles, and then the text will be layered over the top.

Discuss the mise en scene – what impact does this have on the audience?
They have used a simple colour scheme throughout the magazine, and kept the fonts the same. As they have kept the colour scheme the same throughout the magazines people may then start to associate those colours and font with NME magazine. The costumes that are used are often very punk, leather jackets, tight jeans and metal studs.

Who is the target audience? How do you know this?
The average reader of NME magazine is a 24 year old devoted music fan who loves the cutting edge culture of rock music. I found out that 69% of the readers are male, with 52% working full-time and 29% still studying, and typically the reader enjoys going to gigs and other events in their spare time. The standard reader spends nearly 19 hours per week on the internet.

What do they offer their readership?
They don't offer their readers anything tangible for example makeup, posters etc. However they do offer
exclusive interviews with current and up coming artists that other magazines may not have.

What elements would you like to ‘borrow’ for your own magazine?
I would like to borrow their layout ideas as it is organized but not boring. The reader is able to see where everything is and it is easier to read and make sense of.

List of equipment needed for my photo shoot

Equipment
There is not much equipment that is needed but this is what I will need:

  • Firstly I will need a camera to take my pictures.
  • I will have a shot list of the pictures I plan on taking.
  • A tripod to make sure that the camera stays steady so that my pictures do not blur.
  • My costumes that will be used in each shot.
  • The props that will be needed.

costumes and props

These are some examples of punk rock artists. I have researched them in order to help me with the costumes I will need to use. I have found that most of them wear a lot of denim and leather and also have tight skinny jeans on. The colours are often quite dull for example black, white, grey and sometimes red. Their clothes and shoes have metal studs or buckles on them which help add to the punk look. I also found that alot of the boys have long hair but as i am using a girl I wont need to worry about that.

Also they are wearing a lot of jewelry, for example bracelets and head bands. I will bear this in mind when finding an outfit to go with my genre of music.

By researching what other artists wear I now have a good idea of what costumes and props I can use in my photo shoot.

first draft of double page spread article

Double page spread article first draft.
“The band has decided to go their separate ways,” said a producer close to the band. Tensions reached a “boiling point” over the weekend when Chelsea joined her footballer boyfriend on his private jet instead of traveling from Los Angeles to London with her band mates.  Later Chelsea did a Skype call with the rest of the band and told them she wanted to go out but on her own. Chelsea is planning on doing a solo record and a record with famous artist Taylor Swift.

Fans were outraged and brokenhearted  - to say the least.  ”How can they break up when they are the biggest band in the world! They can’t, please tell me it’s not true,” said Amy Smyth from London. “I would die if they broke up.”

Chelsea, 18, wants to pursue business opportunities and her solo debut, without having to get the ‘okay’ from the other guys.
She feels that she is the biggest star in the band and has millions of fans worldwide.  “She gets offers every day for projects, such as her own perfume, a clothing line and even leading roles in top Hollywood movies.  The band is holding her back,” said Chelsea’s new manager.  ”She may even do arena shows on her own this summer to kick off her solo career.”

Remaining members of the band–Sam Horan, Jason Smith and Kirsty Tomlinson have decided to continue with the band and are on the hunt for a new member to fill the gap Chelsea has left behind. ‘Chelsea was an amazing rocker and a great person to be around, she will be missed however the band will pursue and we will be bigger and better than ever.’ Said and member Sam Horan.

Simon Cowell, who originally signed the band, is reportedly livid that the band broke up and he’s planning a major lawsuit against Chelsea.  Even though the band is signed with Columbia Records now, Simon still feels a close tie to the band.  ”Simon’s not happy and when Simon’s not happy – watch out!” said one of Simons close personal friends.

Since leaving the band Ryan has released a new single, which hit number three in the top 40 remix chart. The start of his solo career seems to be going well, lets see what the future holds for Ryan and the band he left behind. I added this last bit in to add some extra information and make my article slightly longer, I also changed Chelsea to Ryan as he was going to be my new model.

NME front page analysis

Here I have analysed the front cover of a popular music magazine. I pointed out all the different colours they had used: red, white, blue and black to link in with the american themed main image, special offers for example the chance to win tickets to a popular festival and main articles about bands or solo artists. By analysing the front cover it helped me decide on what I wanted mine to look like. I decided that I liked how the layout was simple but still interesting and not to over powering. This is the type of layout I will focus on when making my own magazine front cover. It has also given my ideas of articles and competitions that I could use for my own magazine.

Survey

I came up with a survey that consisted of 10 multiple choice questions. I used this survey and asked a variety of different ages to fill it in. This was to help me decide on what genre of magazine I wanted to do based on what was the most popular choice on my survey was. It also helped me to find out whether people prefer the pictures, the articles or the free things that are offered with the magazine. My survey made it clear what I needed my magazine to look like and what it should include in order to be popular within a wide variety of age groups.
